Relationship Therapist, Psychologist, Psychiatrist: What are the Differences?
In Canada, the psychologist is a health professional who holds a doctorate. The psychology practice consists of assessing psychological and mental functioning as well as identifying, recommending and implementing interventions and treatments to promote psychological health and restore the mental health of a human being interacting with their environment. Training in psychology does not require personal individual therapy.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialized psychiatry who diagnoses, treats and attempts to prevent mental illness, psychiatric problems and emotional disorders. Because he/she is a doctor, they can prescribe medication.
Relationship therapy is a support offered by a professional as part of therapeutic help. This therapy is based on recognized humanistic approaches and differences itself from psychotherapy by focusing its intervention on the personal development of the client (self-relationship) and in his/her relational competence (relation with others) rather than on interpretation and treatment of pathologies. All therapists in counseling have followed a long process of personal therapy during their training, and continue this process during their professional activity. They are regularly supervised on their work.
